Male Hormone Replacement Therapy

Traditionally age related male hormone changes were not considered problematic because fertility in men persists until advanced age.
In contrast, women undergo ovarian function failure and require multiple hormone replacement.

What is Andropause?

More careful evaluation in males show progressive age related changes including:

* Decreased muscle mass & strength
* Decreased vigor, low energy
* Decreased libido
* Insomnia
* Nervousness & depression
* Hair losss

These changes usually begin in the fourth and fifth decades and point towards hormonal imbalances and deficiencies which may be considered equivalent of menopause i.e. Andropause.
Symptoms of Andropause include decrease in muscle mass and muscle strength, increased body fat and lowered libido, accompanied by decrease in mental sharpness and decrease of overall energy levels.

What can be done about it?

Men can benefit from bio-identical hormone replacement therapy just as women do.
This is done as part of a comprehensive and natural anti-aging program at La Clinique de France Internationale with Dr Pierre R. Clero.
Optimal health is dependent upon the balance of hormones and not just one single hormone. Currently men with low androgens (Male hormones) can benefit from hormone replacement therapy.
Also men with imbalances in their androgens to estrogen and progesterone can also be hormone supplemented to achieve balance.
This would improve the quality of your life and increase your life span.

What Results can be expected from replacement of declining hormones in men?

Evidence suggests that replacing men's testosterone as it declines can protect men from a variety of age-related conditions, including:

* Preventing atherosclerosis, heart attacks, and high blood pressure.
* Minimizing loss of muscle mass and strength common to aging.
* Preventing the decline of sexual ability or re-invigorating sexuality if it has already begun to diminish.
* Keeping the prostate gland healthy.
* Prevention of osteoporosis - a common problem for men in their 70s
* Normalizing blood sugar, cholesterol, and HDL ("good") cholesterol.

For Men

How do we handle Male menopause, uh! Andropause?

Dr. Clero has developed a thorough anti-aging program, which includes components designed specifically for men.
During the initial appointment, the patient spends about an hour or more with Dr. Clero where all symptoms and health concerns are addressed.
Initial recommendations are made, and lab testing for existing levels of testosterone, estrogens, progesterone, DHEA, and other hormones are ordered, along with testing as necessary to help evaluate other aspects of anti-aging therapy.
When lab results return, a follow-up appointment is set to discuss the results and establish a complete treatment program.

Chronic Fatigue

According to Center for Disease Control CDC between 1 and 4 million Americans suffer from Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS).
They are seriously impaired, at least a quarter are unemployed or on disability because of CFS.
40% of people in the general population who report symptoms of CFS have a serious, treatable, previously unrecognized medical condition Chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) is a complicated disorder characterized by extreme fatigue that doesn't improve with bed rest and may worsen with physical or mental activity.
Unlike flu (influenza) symptoms, which usually subside in a few days or weeks, the signs and symptoms of CFS can last much longer.
They may come and go frequently with no identifiable pattern Chronic fatigue syndrome may precipitate after an infection, such as a cold or viral illness or after a time of great stress. It can also come on gradually without a clear starting point or obvious cause.

Women are diagnosed with chronic fatigue syndrome far more often than men are.
Chronic fatigue syndrome is a flu-like condition that can drain your energy and, sometimes, last for years.
People previously healthy and full of energy may experience a variety of signs and symptoms.

Conventional approach

Psycological councelling (It's all in your head type approach), rehabilitation with physical therapy and exercise specialist are the common ways of managing chronic fatigue syndrome.
Other professionals like sleep therapist or dietition can also be added to the list of this multidisciplinary approach.
The patient ussually has to learn to just live with it once all elase has failed to completley relieve the misery of the chronic fatigue patient.

How we approach chronic fatigue syndrome

At La Clinique de France Internationale we know that the fatigue, pain, discomfort and depression you may be feeeling are not all in your head.
These do have an underlying cause and we can help you identify that and then treat that. This way we not only treat it but reverse the condition by increasing your energy and vitality.

Diet Plays a key role in making a difference

If you have fibromyalgia or chronic fatigue, what you eat will make a huge difference in how you feel.
A diet high in saturated fats and refined vegetable oils will exacerbate pain, while the omega-3 fatty acids found in fish and flaxseed oil will help alleviate it.
Likewise, eating lots of refined carbohydrates will worsen your condition, whereas slow-burning carbs (foods rich in fiber) give your body the sustained source of energy it needs.

We also evaluate our patients for food allergies, which are an often overlooked but frequent cause of fatigue and pain.

Natural Treatments Can Alleviate Depression and Insomnia

At Many patients with fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue suffer from depression.
They also tend to have low levels of the neurotransmitter serotonin, which plays a crucial role in regulating mood. In addition to contributing to depression, low levels of serotonin can cause the sensation of pain to be greatly heightened.

At the La Clinique de France Internationale we use several natural supplements that boost serotonin levels, improve mood, and relieve pain.
St. John's wort, SAMe, and 5-HTP are far safer than Prozac and other prescription antidepressants and are backed by solid research, not to mention the positive experiences of our patients.

Diabetes

According to American Diabetes Association, there are 20.8 million children and adults in the United States, or 7% of the population, who have diabetes. While an estimated 14.6 million have been diagnosed with diabetes, unfortunately, 6.2 million people (or nearly one-third) are unaware that they have the disease.

If you have Diabetes, one of the silent killers of mankind, you can expect to get some complication of diabetes such as heart disease, stroke, obesity, and high cholesterol, Amputation etc.

In fact, more than 65% of people with diabetes die from heart disease or stroke. With diabetes, heart attacks occur earlier in life and often result in death. By managing diabetes, high blood pressure and cholesterol, people with diabetes can reduce their risk.

Conventional approach

Usually when you are diagnosed with Diabetes you are put on one of the oral agents which lower blood sugar by raising insulin levels.
The problem is not the low levels of insulin but the tissue sensitivity to existing insulin.
Of course as these drugs are synthetic they can also cause many side effects and do not actually correct the underlying metabolic disorder.
As the insulin levels rise, they may have adverse effects on cardiovascular system. This can even lead to heart disease.

How we treat Diabetes

At La Clinique de France Internationale, our approach is to do everything we can to improve insulin sensitivity.
This includes correct diet, supplements and exercise.
Also latest research has linked Testosterone deficiency in middle age men to non-insulin dependent diabetes. So we also balance the various hormones to affect the glucose metabolism and improve insulin tissue sensitivity.

Fibromyalgia

Are you familiar with someone always complaining of vague pains and aches in the body.
This would usually end up being labeled as Fibromyalgia. This condition affects usually women between 25 to 55 years.
This condition is also closely related to chronic fatigue syndrome that these share the similar symptoms such as fatigue, sleep disorders, pains, tiredness, depression, tight muscles which ache and cause pain on touch.
This condition could be so debilitation that this exasperates the sufferer in even carrying out the daily activities of life.

Traditional approach

Some of you may be aware that traditional medicine has very little to offer to these ailing patients.
They usually end up as difficult cases who have it all in their heads. Often times get put on harmful drugs, such as anti depressants, sleeping pills, anxiolytics, anti-inflammatory etc and the list goes on. When these fail they are told to "live with it".

How we approach Fibromyalgia

At the La Clinique de France Internationale, we try to discover the underlying cause of Fibromyalgia.
We can help you if you have been diagnosed with Fibromyalgia! These symptoms do have a known cause if someone would look for it carefully.

We don't just treat the symptoms we treat the cause and all of our treatments are natural. This includes a correct nutritional plan, supplements and hormonal balancing.
This would increase energy levels, boosts immunity, enhance sleep and mood.
We also evaluate our patients for food allergies, which are an often overlooked but frequent cause of fatigue and pain.

Gastrointestinal Problems

The common gastrointestinal problems such as ulcerative colitis, chron's disease, gastritis, gastro esophageal reflux, indigestion, irritable bowel syndrome, constipation and diarrhea often are as result of improper food intake, deficiency of digestive enzymes or toxicity of the gut.

Conventional approach

Standard medical evaluation is done using colonoscopy, upper GI endoscopy, ultrasound and CT scan.
Often times these fail to treat the underlying causes of above-mentioned ailments.

The patients usually get put on symptomatic treatments to suppress them such as steroids, anti-inflammatory drugs, antidepressants or sedatives.

How we treat these problems

Our approach is a bit different.
We look at the functional perspective of the situation.
We check into what are the underlying elements that are adding up to the symptoms.
Our diagnostic testing includes comprehensive stool testing, candida testing, food allergies, IgA testing for Gluten intolerance, heavy metals, trace minerals, urine organic acids, and vitamin and mineral levels.

Changing the diet to the appropriate Metabolic type (genetically customized), supplementing the body with appropriate vitamins and minerals,
vitamin C drips for handling inflammation, handling with digestives enzymes,
essential fatty acids etc are some of the ways we approach the problem.
And this usually helps where no other method has worked before. Detoxification, heavy metal removal,
and liver rejuvenation are all part of a good digestive system rehabilitation program.

Through the rational approach many of these difficulties can be resolved with great relief to the patient.

Heart Disease

According to the American Heart Association, approximately 60 million Americans have some form of cardiovascular disease.
This includes atherosclerosis or blockages in the arteries,
which underlie the most common form of heart disease and are the cause of most heart attacks.

The Conventional Approach

The first line of conventional treatment is medication, and many patients with heart disease are prescribed one drug after another.
These drugs do not address the true problem in heart disease: atherosclerosis.
Furthermore, most of them have unpleasant and sometimes significant side effects. Patients with heart disease are also often pushed (unnecessarily) into angioplasty or bypass surgery.
More than a million of these procedures are performed every year, yet for the vast majority of patients, they are completely unwarranted.
Except in a small, easily identified subgroup of patients, bypass and angioplasty do not save lives or prevent heart attacks.
Several major scientific studies have shown that patients treated with a more conservative course do just as well as those who undergo bypass surgery or angioplasty.

Our Approach

You will be assessed for which of the risk factor you particularly have to heart disease. Risk factors for heart disease include:

* High blood pressure
* Diabetes or insulin resistance
* Elevated cholesterol
* Cigarette smoking
* Obesity (actually a weak factor unless there is morbid obesity - 100 pounds above ideal body weight)
* Family history of heart disease
* Lack of exercise
* High Homocysteine

This helps us to zero in what you need to handle the heart disease or having higher risk of it in the future.

How We Treat Heart Disease

At La Clinique de France Internationale,

we believe that heart disease is not only treatable using natural means but also preventable. We help our patients implement a treatment program that, unlike drugs and surgery, addresses the underlying causes of heart disease and has the potential of actually reversing this condition.

Eat a Heart-Healthy Diet

There is a well-recognized relationship between diet and heart disease. Saturated fat from animal foods and trans fats from processed oils raise cholesterol,
impede blood flow, and contribute to the buildup of plaque in the arteries.
Fruits and vegetables, beans and whole grains, raw nuts and seeds, and cold-water fish, on the other hand, contain vitamins, minerals and essential fatty acids that nurture the cardiovascular system.
We find out what is your body's metabolic type so we can zero in what your own body's exact nutritional
requirements are and then we fine tune it almost like your own fingerprints.

Nutritional Supplements for the Heart...

A cornerstone of our protocol for treating heart disease is nutritional supplementation.
Antioxidants such as vitamins C and E, B-complex vitamins, magnesium, fish oil capsules, coenzyme Q10: these and other nutrients play specific,
well-studied roles in the treatment and prevention of heart disease.
Your personal physician will prescribe an individualized nutritional
supplement program that addresses your particular condition.

1. Coenzyme Q10- 100-400 mg
2. L-carnitine 500-1000 mg
3. Fish oil- 1500-3000 mg thins the blood, but much more safely than prescription blood thinners.
4. Magnesium- 400-1000 mg This relaxes the arteries in much the same way that calcium-channel blockers do.
5. D ribose (a natural sugar that enhances energy production in the heart) - 2 scoops

Well-designed nutritional supplement program, combined with a good diet and regular exercise,
can replace the need for many of the drugs you may be taking for heart disease.

Improve Circulation With Chelation

Free radical damage and poor circulation are two hallmarks of heart disease,
and EDTA Chelation therapy is an intravenous therapy that addresses both.
When this protein is infused into the body, it attaches to minerals (including lead,
other toxic metals, and calcium built up in the arteries) and carries them out of the body in the urine.
This reduces the free radical load caused by heavy metals,
improves the health of the arteries, and dramatically improves circulation.

In addition to reducing angina,
EDTA chelation also has a proven track record of improving circulation and alleviating pain in the legs and other areas affected by atherosclerosis,
which is very common in patients with heart disease.

High Blood Pressure

You can have high blood pressure (hypertension) for years without a single symptom. But silence isn't golden.
Uncontrolled high blood pressure increases your risk of serious health problems, including heart attack and stroke.

Blood pressure is determined by the amount of blood your heart pumps
and the amount of resistance to blood flow in your arteries. The more blood your heart pumps and the narrower your arteries, the higher your blood pressure.

Fortunately, high blood pressure can be easily detected.
And once you know you have high blood pressure, you can work with your doctor to control.

Conventional approach

The conventional approach to high blood pressure has been to put the patients on certain anti- hypertensive drugs.
Commonly beta-blockers, diuretics and calcium channel blockers.
Often time's high blood pressure gets controlled but unwanted side effects occur.
For the side effects more drugs are given and so the cycle goes on.
Eventually some patient ends up with several anti-hypertensives to say the least.

How we approach high blood pressure

Again nutrition plays a major role in maintaining normal blood pressure.
Various supplements actually a triad of 3 supplements has been recommended by leading cardiologist Stephen Sinatra.
A combination of Coenzyme Q-10, L carnitine and D-Ribose has been found to bring the blood pressure down.
There are other natural alternative herbal supplements which have been shown to lower the blood pressure in many studies.

Check with our Doctor to find out what supplement is good for you!

Menopause

Why Hormone replacement?

For years Doctors have been treating women for menopause by giving them estrogen and progesterone then why do we neglect the other crucial hormones
such as Natural thyroid hormone, DHEA (Dehydroepiandrosterone), Melatonin, Human Growth Hormone (HGH)?
At La Clinique de France Internationale, we realize the value of natural hormone replacement therapy.
In addition to alleviating the symptoms of menopause and reducing risk of osteoporosis, hormone replacement can also aid in the anti-aging process, improve your memory and mood, and create an overall sense of well-being.
We specialize in Bioidentical hormone replacement therapy.
After a thorough examination and the necessary lab tests,
Dr Pierre Clero will prescribe for you the proper natural hormones that will have you looking and feeling better than you have in years.

What are bioidentical hormones?

Bioidentical hormones are exactly the same hormones, molecule by molecule that your body produces.
They are modified in a lab derived mostly from plant sources but are still considered natural to your body because they are identical.
Body does not consider then a foreign substance and so does not cause any adverse reactions. Synthetic hormones are also made in a lab, but most importantly are not identical to your body.
Bioidentical hormones are superior to types of synthetic hormones commonly prescribed.

Why do I need to test for hormone levels?

Hormones are powerful substances that control multiple functions through out the body.
Hormone levels should be sufficient and balanced. Too little or too much of them is not conducive to long-term emotional, mental and bodily health.

Just as you cannot balance your bank account without numbers on your bank statements,
hormones testing provide both a basis for treatment and proximity to your goal. One can then customize natural hormone dosing to meet individual needs.
In other words Optimize hormone levels for minimum dose to relieve symptoms and avoid overdosing. We may choose to prescribe various different hormones like estrogen, progesterone, testosterone,
thyroid, Cortisol, DHEA, Melatonin, or growth hormone, depending on what your symptoms are and which hormone(s) your body needs.
This is done on a gradient scale so as to let the body adjust itself naturally.

Women

What is menopause?

Literally, menopause means the cessation of the monthly menstrual cycle and signals the end of a woman's natural childbearing years.
Menopause is neither a disease nor an illness; it is a natural and usually gradual change in glandular function,
when major hormonal shifts occur as a result of ovaries not producing estrogen and progesterone.
On average, this occurs at age 52, but can occur much earlier or later.

What is perimenopause?

As a woman approaches menopause, her hormone production may fluctuate wildly,
causing hot flashes, moodiness, depression, loss of libido, sleep problems, and more. Some women experience symptoms early
- in some cases 10-15 years before clinical menopause.

Fluctuating levels of hormones can cause one or more of the following:
* Hot flashes
* Fatigue
* Night sweats
* Irregular Periods
* Insomnia
* Breast tenderness
* Memory loss
* Weight Gain
* Mood swings
* Anxiety
* Low sex drive
* Increased skin wrinkling

What can be done?

The right balance of hormones is important to long-term emotional, mental and bodily health.
We recommend a natural hormone replacement therapy (often called BHRT, Bioidentical HRT) that can provide relief from menopause symptoms,
and may also help minimize the risks of cardiovascular disease, Alzheimer's, osteoporosis, and some types of cancer.
It also Increases sense of well being by removing underlying hormone deficit and imbalances.

We treat and correct symptoms using natural hormones with testing before and after treatment.

But I already take hormones? Or I tried hormones already and they didn't work?

For last 50 or so years women in this country have been prescribed Premarin and Provera.
Premarin is a synthetic form of estrogen and is made from the urine of pregnant mares.
Provera is synthetic progesterone and does not have the same functions as natural progesterone.
Most women get the same dose of medication and usually do not have their hormone levels checked.

At La Clinique de France Internationale, we take a different approach.
We carefully measure your entire hormone panel, not just female hormones such as estrogen,
so that we can tailor a replacement program specifically for you.
In this way, we bring all of your hormones into balance, allowing you to feel years younger.
We use only bioidentical hormones.
Hormones are available from some large pharmaceutical companies in predetermined doses,
but they are also available through compounding pharmacies in a more custom hormone dose formulation.

What are the benefits of estrogen therapy?

Estrogens promote youthful cell growth in organs of the body.

The benefits of estrogens include:

* Enhanced skin smoothness, firmness and elasticity
* Enhanced moistness of mucus membranes
* Enhanced muscle tone
* Enhanced sex drive
* Reduced risk of osteoporosis
* Reduced risk of colon cancer
* Improved memory and neurological function
* Greater feeling of well being.

Are you estrogen dominant?

The increasingly popular term Estrogen dominant does not mean you have too much estrogen
but that you have too little progesterone in relation to your estrogen even if the estrogen level is actually also low.
There is an ideal ration between the two (Pg/E2).
You can actually have normal or even low levels of estrogen, but when you have diminished levels of progesterone levels,
estrogen dominance results. Because estrogen is a proliferative (cell growing) hormone, too much of it without progesterone to balance it will cause problems such as:

* Fibrocystic disease
* Water Retention
* Heavy/Irregular periods
* Low Thyroid Symptoms
* Migraines
* Belly weight gain
* Bone/mineral loss
* Tearfulness

Are there any other hormones I should take?

Many women are also deficient in testosterone.
While testosterone is often considered a male hormone,
it is a critical hormone in women as well. Replacement therapy with natural testosterone can increase sexual desire and improve feelings of emotional well-being.

Besides bioidentical hormones we also provide nutritional supplements tailored for you,
recommendation for life style changes, whole foods, diet, exercise and relaxation and enjoyment of life.

Prostate Concerns

Prostate Enlargement - Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH)

Prostate problems come to the forefront as men get older.
If you are one of the 75% of men over 50 then you know what are the usual symptoms, which are quite bothersome.
To name a few: Urinary frequency, urgency, nighttime urination,
difficulty getting started, reduced stream, and urine leakage.
Even though this is not a life-threatening emergency,
but it sure does seriously reduce the quality of life in men over 50.
At worst it could cause urinary tract infection or even complete blockage of urinary flow.

Traditional approach

Usually the Doctor would give you two choices: either surgery or drugs.
Drugs have significant side effects even though these drugs may mask your symptoms causing apparent cure.
The surgical approach that is called trans urethral resection comes with relief of symptoms
but with this approach no measure has been taken to handle of basic reason of prostate growth.
In other words the prostate enlargement can recur requiring repeat surgery usually with in 10 years.

Our Approach

At the La Clinique de France Internationale, our approach to BPH is effective,
non-invasive, and virtually free of negative side effects.
We focus on proven natural therapies to relieve BPH,
including targeted nutritional supplements and specific dietary recommendations.
There are specific nutrients which can virtually shrink the prostate relieving you of the many symptoms of BPH.
Theyinclude They include saw palmetto, pygeum, nettle root, flower pollen extract, lycopene,
and other compounds, in a dose appropriate for your particular condition.

What if I Have Prostate Cancer?

We do not treat cancer per se at the La Clinique de France Internationale
although there are Specific nutrients, such as vitamin D, lycopene, and indole 3 carbinol,
which are useful in both prevention and management of prostate cancer.
We do however offer our patients who have prostate cancer therapies and nutritional supplement regimens that boost the immune system, lower PSA, and support overall health.
